When to come in

Signs your car needs a diagnostic

  • The check engine light is on. A steady light means the computer stored a fault code. It can be minor or serious, and the code is the first clue.
  • The check engine light is flashing. A flashing light usually means the engine is misfiring badly. Slow down and get it checked right away to avoid damaging the catalytic converter.
  • Other warning lights are on. ABS, airbag, battery and tire pressure lights all store codes too. A scan tells us which system is reporting the problem.
  • The car runs rough or stalls. Misfires, idle problems and stalling usually leave codes behind, even if the light isn’t on yet.
  • Worse gas mileage for no clear reason. A bad sensor can make the engine run rich and burn more fuel without any other obvious symptom.
  • You smell gas or failed an emissions test. Fuel smells and emissions failures are often tied to the EVAP system, which we can smoke test to find leaks.

How we diagnose

More than just reading a code

A computerized diagnostic uses a scanner to read the fault codes stored in your car’s system. It finds problems that a visual inspection alone can miss.

  • Engine and check engine light codes
  • Misfire and fuel system codes
  • EVAP system smoke testing
  • ABS and brake warning lights
  • Sensors and electrical faults
  • Tire pressure (TPMS) warnings

A code tells us which system has a problem, not always which part failed. So after the scan we test the parts involved, and when needed we use tools like a smoke machine to find EVAP and vacuum leaks. Then we explain what we found and what it will take to fix it.

Check engine light and the MD emissions test

A check engine light can cause trouble with Maryland’s emissions testing. We can find what’s causing the light and repair it here. For your safety inspection, see our Maryland State Inspection page.

Questions

Computer diagnostics FAQ

What does a computer diagnostic on a car do?

We plug a scan tool into your car’s diagnostic port to read the fault codes stored by the onboard computer. The codes point to the system with the problem, and then we test the parts to find the exact cause.

Is it safe to drive with the check engine light on?

If the light is steady and the car drives normally, it’s usually safe to drive for a short time, but get it checked soon. If the light is flashing, the engine is likely misfiring and you should slow down and have it looked at right away.

Can you just clear the check engine light?

We can, but if the problem is still there the light will come back. It’s better to find and fix the cause, which is what we do.

What is an EVAP smoke test?

It’s a test where we fill the fuel vapor (EVAP) system with harmless smoke to see where it leaks out. It’s the most reliable way to find small leaks that trigger check engine codes, including a loose or bad gas cap.
