Signs your car is due for a tune-up
- The engine is hard to start. Worn spark plugs or a clogged fuel filter can make the engine crank longer than it should, especially on cold mornings.
- Rough idle or shaking at a stop. If the car shakes or the RPMs bounce at a red light, a spark plug, coil or ignition wire may not be firing right.
- You’re getting worse gas mileage. A dirty air filter or tired spark plugs make the engine work harder and burn more fuel for the same drive.
- The car hesitates when you step on the gas. Misfires and weak spark show up as stumbling or slow acceleration, often when merging or going uphill.
- The check engine light is on. Misfire and fuel mixture codes are common reasons for the light. We can read the code and tell you if a tune-up will fix it.
- It’s been a long time since the last one. If you don’t remember the last time the plugs and filters were changed, it’s worth checking your owner’s manual or letting us look.

What we replace during a tune-up
What a tune-up includes depends on your car, because newer engines don’t have some of the parts older ones do. These are the parts we typically replace:
- Spark plugs
- Engine air filter
- PCV valve
- Cabin air filter (if equipped)
- Ignition cables (if equipped)
- Distributor cap and rotor (if equipped)
- Fuel filter (if it’s outside the fuel pump)
Before we start, we’ll let you know which of these your car actually needs, so you’re not paying for parts that are still good.
Check engine light on?
A tune-up fixes a lot of misfire problems, but not all of them. If your check engine light is on, we start with a computer diagnostic so we know exactly what’s wrong before replacing anything.
How much is a cabin or engine air filter replacement?
At New Level Auto Service, cabin air filter and engine air filter replacement starts at $140.
- Cabin air filter and engine air filterPrice varies with your car’s year, make and modelStarting at$140
This is a starting price, not a fixed price. The exact price depends on your car’s year, make and model. Call (301) 762-1200 to check the price for your car. Prices as of October 2026.

Tune-up FAQ
What is included in a car tune-up?
On most cars, a tune-up means replacing the spark plugs, engine air filter and PCV valve, plus the cabin filter, ignition cables, distributor cap and rotor, and fuel filter on cars that have them. Newer cars have fewer of these parts, so the exact list depends on your vehicle.
How much does it cost to replace the cabin and engine air filters?
At New Level Auto Service, cabin air filter and engine air filter replacement starts at $140. It’s a starting price, and the exact price depends on your car’s year, make and model.
How often does a car need a tune-up?
It depends on the car. Many modern engines use long-life spark plugs that last around 60,000 to 100,000 miles, while filters need changing more often. Your owner’s manual has the exact schedule, and we’re happy to check it for you.
Will a tune-up improve my gas mileage?
If worn plugs or a dirty air filter were making the engine work harder, yes, you’ll usually see better mileage and smoother driving after a tune-up.
Can a tune-up fix a check engine light?
Sometimes. Misfire codes are often caused by worn spark plugs or ignition parts. We read the code first so we fix the real problem instead of guessing.
