Signs your brakes need to be checked
- Squealing or squeaking when you brake. Most brake pads have a small metal tab that starts to squeal when the pad material gets thin. It’s a built-in warning that the pads are close to done.
- Grinding or a metal-on-metal sound. This usually means the pads are worn all the way down and metal is hitting the rotor. Get it looked at right away, because it damages the rotors quickly.
- The pedal pulses or the steering wheel shakes when you stop. That’s often a warped or unevenly worn rotor, commonly from overheating.
- A soft or spongy pedal, or a pedal that sinks. This can point to air in the lines, old brake fluid or a leak. Don’t wait on this one.
- The car pulls to one side when braking. A sticking caliper, a collapsed hose or uneven pad wear can all cause it.
- The brake warning light or ABS light is on. The car’s computer has spotted a problem with the brake system.
What we check during a brake inspection
We look at the whole system, not just the pads. That means the pads and rotors on all four wheels, the calipers, the brake hoses and lines, and the level and condition of the brake fluid. We’ll also look for grease or brake fluid on the pads, which makes them slip, and for glazed (crystallized) pads that have gotten too hot and stopped gripping well.

How do I know if I need new brake pads?
The most common sign is a high-pitched squeal when you press the brake. That sound comes from the wear indicator on the pad. Other signs are grinding, a longer stopping distance, or a brake warning light on the dash. A quick inspection will tell you exactly how much pad is left.

How long do brake pads last?
Most brake pads last somewhere between 30,000 and 70,000 miles. It depends a lot on how and where you drive. Stop-and-go traffic around Rockville and on I-270 wears pads faster than steady highway driving.
Is it safe to drive with squeaky brakes?
A light squeak is usually the early warning, so you have a little time, but not much. If the squeak turns into grinding, or the car takes longer to stop, stop driving it and get the brakes checked. Waiting usually turns a pad replacement into a pad and rotor job.
Do I have to replace the rotors every time I replace the pads?
Not always. If the rotors are still thick enough and aren’t warped or badly scored, they can stay. If they’re worn past spec, warped or grooved from grinding, they need to be replaced so the new pads work properly. We measure them and tell you which one it is.
Can you fix my brakes if my car failed the Maryland inspection?
Yes. We’re a licensed Maryland State Inspection station and a full repair shop, so brake problems found during an inspection can be repaired here.
