Signs of a battery, alternator or starter problem
- Slow cranking. If the engine turns over slowly, especially on cold mornings, the battery is often getting weak.
- A single click, then nothing. One click when you turn the key or push start can point to a bad starter or a poor connection.
- The battery keeps dying. If you keep needing a jump, either the battery won’t hold a charge or the alternator isn’t charging it.
- The battery light is on while driving. That usually means the charging system has a problem, often the alternator.
- Dim or flickering lights. Headlights and dash lights that dim at idle can be a sign of a weak alternator.
- Corrosion on the battery terminals. White or green buildup on the terminals can cause poor connections and starting trouble.
Battery, alternator or starter: which one is it?
These three parts work together. The battery provides the power to start the car, the starter uses it to turn the engine over, and the alternator recharges the battery once the engine is running.

How do I know if it’s my battery or my alternator?
If the car won’t start but runs fine after a jump and then dies again later, the alternator may not be charging. If it starts after a jump and stays running but won’t start again after sitting, the battery is more likely the problem. Testing both is the only way to be sure.
How long does a car battery last?
Most car batteries last about three to five years. Heat, cold, short trips and lots of electrical accessories can shorten that.
What does a clicking sound mean when I try to start the car?
Rapid clicking usually means the battery is too weak to turn the starter. A single click with no crank often points to the starter or a bad connection.
What does the battery light on the dashboard mean?
It usually means the charging system isn’t working right, often the alternator or its belt. The car may run on battery power for a little while, but it will eventually die, so have it checked soon.
