Signs of an exhaust problem
- The car is louder than it used to be. A hole in the muffler or a leak in a pipe or gasket makes the exhaust roar, especially when you accelerate.
- Rattling underneath the car. Loose heat shields, broken hangers or rusted clamps rattle over bumps and at idle.
- You smell exhaust in or around the car. Exhaust fumes contain carbon monoxide. If you smell them inside the car, get it checked right away.
- Something is hanging or dragging. Rusted hangers can break and let the exhaust sag or drag on the road.
- The check engine light is on. Exhaust leaks near the oxygen sensors or a failing catalytic converter can set codes.
- Worse gas mileage. Exhaust leaks and converter problems can throw off the engine’s fuel mixture.

Why is my car suddenly so loud?
Usually a hole in the muffler or a leak in an exhaust pipe or gasket. Rust is the most common cause. We can find exactly where it’s leaking on the lift.
Is an exhaust leak dangerous?
It can be. Exhaust contains carbon monoxide, and a leak near the front of the car can let fumes into the cabin. If you smell exhaust inside the car, have it checked right away.
What causes a rattle under my car?
Most often it’s a loose heat shield, a broken exhaust hanger or a rusted clamp. These are usually quick fixes.
Can an exhaust leak cause the check engine light?
Yes. A leak near an oxygen sensor can give it a false reading and set a code. A failing catalytic converter can also turn the light on.
