Signs your car needs an oil change
- The oil change light or reminder is on. Most newer cars track oil life and will tell you when it’s time. Don’t put it off for long.
- It’s been 5,000 miles or six months. That’s our general rule of thumb, unless your owner’s manual says otherwise for your engine and oil type.
- The oil looks dark and gritty on the dipstick. Fresh oil is amber and clear. Dark, thick or gritty oil has done its job and needs to come out.
- The engine sounds louder than usual. Old or low oil doesn’t protect moving parts as well, and you may hear more ticking or knocking.
- You smell oil or see a leak. A burning oil smell or spots under the car can mean a leak, like a worn valve cover gasket. We’ll check while the car is in.
- The oil looks milky or light brown. That’s a warning sign, not a normal oil change. Keep reading below.

What causes milky brown engine oil?
Milky or light brown engine oil usually means coolant is mixing with the oil. This can come from a blown head gasket or another failed gasket in the cooling system.
This isn’t something an oil change will fix, and driving on it can damage the engine. If you see milky oil on the dipstick or under the oil cap, call us and bring the car in so we can find where the coolant is getting in.
While your car is here
An oil change is a good time for a quick look at the rest of the car. If something else comes up, like worn brakes or a check engine light, we’ll let you know and you decide what to do. See our brake repair and tune-up services.

Oil change FAQ
How often should I change my oil?
Our general recommendation is every 5,000 miles or six months, whichever comes first. Some cars and oils are rated for longer intervals, so check your owner’s manual. If you go longer between changes, use an oil made for extended mileage.
How much does an oil change cost at New Level Auto Service?
A full synthetic oil change with a new filter starts at $100 for passenger cars and $200 for European cars, for up to 5 quarts of oil. If your engine takes more than 5 quarts, each extra quart is added. These are starting prices, and the exact price depends on your car’s year, make and model.
What does milky brown engine oil mean?
It usually means coolant is getting into the oil, often from a blown head gasket or another failed gasket in the cooling system. It needs to be checked by a mechanic right away.
What happens if I skip oil changes?
Old oil breaks down and stops protecting the engine. Over time that leads to more wear, sludge and, in the worst case, serious engine damage that costs far more than regular oil changes.
