Signs your engine needs attention
- Knocking or ticking noises. Low oil, worn parts or a failing component can make the engine knock or tick. Don’t ignore it.
- Oil leaks or a burning oil smell. A worn valve cover gasket is a common cause. Oil dripping on hot parts smells bad and can be a fire risk.
- Blue or white smoke from the exhaust. Blue smoke usually means oil burning. Thick white smoke can mean coolant getting into the engine.
- Loss of power or rough running. Misfires, low compression or fuel problems all rob the engine of power.
- Overheating. Running an engine hot can warp parts and blow a head gasket. Pull over and call us.
- Milky oil on the dipstick. That’s usually coolant mixing with oil, often from a head gasket. It needs to be checked right away.

What causes an engine oil leak?
Common causes are a worn valve cover gasket, oil pan gasket, or seals. Oil dripping onto hot engine parts also causes a burning smell. We find the source before recommending a repair.
What are signs of a blown head gasket?
Look for overheating, white smoke from the exhaust, losing coolant without a visible leak, and milky oil on the dipstick. If you see these, stop driving and have the car checked.
Should I repair or replace my engine?
It depends on the damage, the car’s age and value, and the repair cost. We’ll explain both options honestly so you can decide what makes sense for you.
Is it safe to drive with an engine knocking noise?
It’s best not to. A knock can mean low oil or serious internal wear, and driving on it can turn a repair into an engine replacement. Check the oil and have it looked at.
