Signs your car’s A/C needs repair
- It’s blowing warm or only a little cool. Low refrigerant from a leak is the most common reason, but a failing compressor or clutch can do the same thing.
- Weak airflow from the vents. A bad blower motor, blower resistor or a clogged cabin air filter can cut the airflow even when the air is cold.
- The fan only works on some speeds. That’s a classic sign of a failed blower motor resistor or control module.
- Noise when the A/C is on. Grinding, squealing or rattling can come from the compressor, its clutch or the blower motor.
- A musty smell from the vents. Moisture and buildup in the system or a dirty cabin filter can make the air smell.
- The windows won’t defog well. The A/C helps dry the air for defrosting, so a weak system can make foggy windows harder to clear.

A car A/C system is sealed, so if it’s low on refrigerant, there’s a leak somewhere. Just adding refrigerant without finding why it’s low usually means you’ll be back in a few weeks.

Why is my car A/C blowing warm air?
The most common cause is low refrigerant from a leak. Other causes include a failing compressor or compressor clutch, a bad condenser fan, or an electrical problem. We test the system to find which one it is.
Do I just need an A/C recharge?
Maybe, but the A/C is a sealed system, so if it’s low, it’s leaking. A recharge without fixing the leak usually only works for a short time. We check for the cause first.
Why does my A/C fan only work on high?
That usually means the blower motor resistor or control module has failed. It’s a common and fairly quick repair.
Why does my car A/C smell bad?
A musty smell usually comes from moisture and buildup in the system or a dirty cabin air filter. Replacing the filter often helps, and we can check the rest of the system while the car is here.
