Signs of an ABS problem
- The ABS light is on. The ABS computer found a fault and turned off the anti-lock feature. Your regular brakes still work, but the backup safety system doesn’t.
- The traction control light is on too. Traction and stability control use the same wheel speed sensors, so one bad sensor often turns on several lights.
- The brakes pulse at low speeds. A bad or dirty wheel speed sensor can make the ABS kick in when it shouldn’t, like when you’re slowing down at a light.
- Wheels lock up on wet roads. If the ABS isn’t working, the wheels can lock and skid during hard stops.
- The speedometer acts up. On some cars, the speedometer uses the same wheel speed signals, so it can jump or drop out.
- The brake warning light is on as well. That can point to low brake fluid or a bigger brake system problem. Get it checked right away.
What causes the ABS light
Your ABS uses a speed sensor at each wheel to watch for a wheel that’s about to lock. When it sees one, it pulses the brake on that wheel so you can keep steering during a hard stop.

What does the ABS light mean?
It means the anti-lock brake system found a problem and turned itself off. Your normal brakes still work, but the wheels can lock up in a hard stop. The most common cause is a bad wheel speed sensor.
Is it safe to drive with the ABS light on?
You can usually drive carefully, since the regular brakes still work, but you lose anti-lock protection in emergencies and on slippery roads. Get it checked soon. If the red brake warning light is also on, have it checked right away.
What is a wheel speed sensor?
It’s a small sensor at each wheel that tells the car’s computer how fast that wheel is turning. The ABS, traction control and sometimes the speedometer depend on it.
Why are my ABS and traction control lights on at the same time?
Both systems use the same wheel speed sensors, so a single bad sensor or wire usually turns on both lights.
