Signs of a TPMS problem
- The tire pressure light stays on. If you’ve checked and filled all four tires and the light is still on, a sensor may be bad or not talking to the car.
- The light flashes, then stays on. On most cars, a light that flashes for about a minute at startup and then stays solid means a system fault, not low air.
- One tire keeps reading wrong. A sensor with a weak battery or damage can show the wrong pressure or no reading at all.
- You just got new tires or wheels. Sensors can be damaged during a tire change, and new sensors need to be programmed to the car.
- You swapped to winter or spare wheels. If the other set doesn’t have programmed sensors, the light will come on.
- The sensors are getting old. TPMS sensors have sealed batteries that usually last around 5 to 10 years, so older cars often need them replaced.
Testing, replacing and programming sensors
Each wheel has a small sensor that reads the tire’s air pressure and sends it to the car’s computer. When one fails or isn’t recognized, the whole system turns the warning light on.

Why is my tire pressure light on when my tires are full?
Usually a TPMS sensor has failed, its battery is dead, or it isn’t programmed to the car. Temperature swings can also trigger the light, so check the pressures first, then have the sensors tested if it stays on.
